It is a subtle correction, but the effect can be stunning!

ELECTROCOAGULATION

What is electrocoagulation?

The electrocoagulation procedure permanently removes skin lesions using high-frequency alternating electric current. It is a quick and non-invasive procedure that involves applying an electrode directly to the lesion, resulting in the cutting (coagulation) of proteins by means of an electric arc between the electrodes.

During the treatment, high-frequency (HF) current flows through the electrode tip, causing coagulation (cutting) of proteins in the tissue. At the point of contact, the unwanted lesion is heated and destroyed, while small blood vessels are closed, preventing bleeding.

The procedure is performed using a specialised device with a thin needle or loop. The entire process usually takes from a few to several minutes, depending on the number and type of lesions. Electrocoagulation can be performed with or without local anaesthesia, depending on the size and location of the lesion and the client’s pain tolerance.

The treatment effectively removes:

  • warts,

  • fibromas,

  • milia,

  • sebaceous cysts,

  • viral, flat and seborrhoeic warts,

  • molluscum contagiosum,

  • stellae angiomas,

  • dilated blood vessels,

  • hypertrophic sebaceous and sweat glands,

  • skin horn,

  • solar keratosis,

  • unwanted hair and excessive hair growth.

Contraindications:

  • pacemakers, insulin pumps, etc.,

  • pregnancy and breastfeeding,

  • fresh tan (sun, solarium or self-tanner) – wait 3 weeks,

  • acid or mechanical peeling within the last 2 weeks,

  • injections in the treatment area (Botox, fillers) within the last 3 weeks,

  • open wounds or skin damage in the treatment area,

  • tendency to develop discolouration,

  • blood clotting and circulation disorders,

  • viral, bacterial or fungal skin diseases,

  • herpes at the treatment site,

  • diabetes, epilepsy, cancer and other conditions associated with photosensitivity,

  • poor general health.

Preparation for the visit and course of the procedure

The procedure is relatively simple but requires proper preparation. It is recommended to avoid sun exposure for approximately two weeks before the treatment, including sunbathing and the use of self-tanning products.

In the month preceding electrocoagulation, it is also advisable to refrain from chemical peels and laser treatments. If any such procedures have been performed, this should be reported to the specialist.

The first step is always a consultation, including a detailed interview and skin examination, to determine whether electrocoagulation is the appropriate treatment method.

Clients should arrive with clean skin, free of make-up. Before the visit, it is important to get adequate rest and maintain good hydration. Keeping the body in optimal condition helps minimise discomfort during the procedure.

During the treatment, the specialist uses electrodes with specially designed tips to deliver electrical current to the tissues. The application usually lasts from a few seconds to one minute, depending on the type and size of the lesion. The procedure can be performed on both the face and the body.

Does the procedure hurt?

Electrocoagulation is usually not painful, although sensations depend on individual pain tolerance. During the procedure, mild discomfort, tingling or a burning sensation may be felt. In some cases, local anaesthesia can be used, but it is generally not required.

Most clients describe the sensation as:

  • a small prick,

  • gentle burning,

  • a warm sensation.

How many treatments are needed?

  • Most lesions are removed after a single treatment.

  • Larger or deeper lesions may require a second session after 3–4 weeks.

  • Some viral warts may require a series of 2–3 treatments.

After-treatment appearance and recommendations

After the procedure, the skin may be red, slightly swollen and tender. This is a normal tissue reaction and usually subsides within a few days.

Small scabs typically form at the treatment site. This is normal and they must not be scratched, soaked or removed manually. They will heal and fall off naturally within a few days.

To ensure proper healing and optimal results, it is essential to follow the specialist’s aftercare instructions. These include:

  • avoiding touching the treated area without washing hands first,

  • not wetting the area for approximately 12 hours,

  • avoiding intense physical activity,

  • avoiding sauna, swimming pool and solarium for 7 days.

Advantages of the procedure:

  • Precision – allows accurate removal of lesions,

  • Minimal invasiveness – no deep incisions or stitches required,

  • Speed – quick procedure,

  • Limited bleeding – blood vessels are closed by electric current,

  • Wide application – suitable for many types of skin lesions.

Effects:

  1. Closing of blood vessels

  2. Wart removal

  3. Multiple wart removal
